Quite a few events taking place throughout South Florida this month. Justin Timberlake & Jay-Z end their “Legends of Summer” North American Tour in Miami (Aug. 16), the drag queens at Lips invite you to play Bingo on Wednesdays; classically trained viola & violin playing hip-hop duo, Black Violin, perform at the The Stage in Miami (Aug. 9), Russian master clown and creator of Slava’s Snowshow, Slava Polunin performs in Miami (through Aug. 25); Etana & Taurus Riley, two of my favorite reggae artists, are set to perform at Summer Jam 2013 in Downtown West Palm Beach (Aug. 31-Sept. 1).
In the mood for food & booze? Stuff your faces and drink in the Keys at LobsterFest (Aug. 8-11) or BrewFest (Aug. 29), head to FAT village in Fort Lauderdale for a free BBQ cookout (Aug. 9), or catch a special screening of the film SOMM accompanied with food & wine pairings at the Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale (Aug. 22).
If you do nothing else, remember to look up to the sky for the Perseid meteor shower (Aug. 11-13).

THROUGH SEPTEMBER 22: Create
“Create” is a major group exhibition presenting a selection of the most important works created over the past 20 years by artists involved with three pioneering non-profit organizations: Creativity Explored, Creative Growth Art Center and the National Institute for Art and Disabilities Art Center (NIAD). The centers offer an experience that is, in many ways, the antithesis of that envisioned by the art critic Roger Cardinal in 1972 when he coined the term “outsider art” to identify the work of artists who have no contact with the art world and who are physically and/or mentally isolated.

Live Glass Blowing Demonstrations (Thur-Sat)
Hollywood is home to the centuries old tradition of glass blowing at the ArtsPark in Downtown Hollywood. Master glassblowers perform live demonstrations in the glass blowing studio every Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Sit comfortably in the theater style viewing area and watch the glassblowers create vessels and sculptures from molten glass that is over 2,000 degrees. Expert artists use the same traditional process that has been around for centuries.

AUGUST 11-13: Perseid Meteor Shower
Look to the sky and watch as bits and pieces left behind by Comet Swift-Tuttle enter the earth’s atmosphere. The comet circles the sun every 133 years. Each year, the earth passes through the debris which generally dissipates before hitting land (except in the rare cases like February 15, 2013 when a 50-foot meteor made landfall over Chelyabinsk, Russia).

AUGUST 31: Jazz Project | Russell Malone
Born in Albany, Georgia, Russell Malone received his first guitar at the age of four and grew up playing a variety of music. A self-taught player, Malone progressed well enough to land a gig with master organist Jimmy Smith at the age of 25. He went on to back Harry Connick, Jr. from 1990-1994, and spent four years during the late 90s touring internationally with Diana Krall, receiving critical acclaim in his role as Diana’s right hand both in concert and on her recordings.
